Walmart’s Brazilian operations – now 80% owned by private equity giant Advent – is to make its physical stores the center of its business after closing down its online operation. The new initiative will concentrate on transforming big-box stores into hybrid wholesale locations similar to Casino’s Assai and Carrefour’s Atacadao, both of which have proved hugely popular with local consumers. Walmart has never succeeded in gaining traction in Brazil’s online environment and in 2017 abandoned first party selling altogether, switching to a 3P marketplace model.
